Resin bound vs resin bonded
Two similar names, two very different surfaces. One is permeable and one is not, which changes the planning position and the price.

One word apart, and not the same product
These two names differ by a single word and describe genuinely different surfaces built in different ways with different properties. The confusion is widespread, and it is not always accidental: resin bonded is cheaper to lay, and a quote that says only "resin driveway" leaves room for you to assume you are getting the other one.
If you take one thing from this page, take the question to ask: is this resin bound or resin bonded, in writing, on the quote.
Resin bound
Stone aggregate and clear resin are mixed together in a forced-action mixer, so every stone is fully coated, and the mixture is trowelled out on site while wet. The result is a smooth, seamless surface with small voids between the coated stones.
Those voids are the important part. Water passes through them into the sub-base, which makes the surface permeable by construction. That is what puts it outside the English planning restriction on impermeable front garden surfacing, and what makes it a sustainable drainage option.
The finish is level and firm underfoot. The stone is locked in place and does not migrate, so there is nothing to rake, nothing to sweep off the path and nothing scattering into the road. Typical life on a sound base is fifteen to twenty years.
Resin bonded
Resin is spread across the base as a continuous layer, and dry aggregate is then scattered over the top and left to bond to it. Only the underside of each stone is in contact with the resin. The result is a rougher, textured finish that looks like loose gravel from a distance.
Because the resin layer underneath is continuous, the surface is not permeable. Water runs off it. That means it falls within the planning restriction on impermeable surfacing in a front garden, and it needs drainage designed accordingly.
It also sheds stone. The scattered aggregate is held on one face only, so loose stone comes away under traffic, particularly in the first year and in the wheel tracks. It is cheaper to lay, it gives more surface grip, and it has legitimate uses, particularly on slopes and around pools where texture is the priority.
Which to choose
For a domestic front driveway in England, resin bound is usually the right answer, and the planning position is the main reason. A permeable surface avoids the need for permission that an impermeable one over five square metres between the house and the highway would trigger, and it keeps rainwater on your own plot.
Resin bonded makes more sense where high surface grip is the overriding need and permeability is not required, such as a steep ramp, a poolside, or a surface being applied over an area that already has designed drainage.
The cost difference is real but smaller than the durability difference. Paying less for a surface that sheds stone for years and puts you inside the planning rules is a poor trade on a front driveway.
